Arts Education Programme

Through our on-going AEP we bring Asian dance to schools in Singapore. The performance lasts for 30 minutes, during which students will learn about different Asian cultures through the dance, music and costumes. At the end of the performance we encourage the students to participate in the dance and learn simple movements.

Please contact us directly if you would like to book a performance.

Messages from Dance 10 performance, 2002

Professor Tommy Koh
Chairman, National Heritage Board

It is my great pleasure to congratulate the Frontier Danceland on its 10th Anniversary.

Its Artistic Director, Low Mei Yoke, has been one of the pioneer choreographers who has the vision of creating a unique brand of contemporary dance with a distinctive Singaporean style. In all her works, she has been developing her own style of communication to form a strong synthesis of dance, music and visual design.

Every year, Frontier Danceland holds at least two major performances. In addition, it has performed in the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, America and Malaysia to rave reviews. Frontier Danceland has achieved its objective of contributing to the development of Singapore’s cultural and artistic development at both national and global levels. The company has been conducting an arts education programme, with over 200 performances, to almost 200,000 students, at schools, polytechnics and tertiary institutions, with the aim of extending the magic of dance to young Singaporeans.

As Frontier Danceland strides towards the next decade, I extend my warmest wishes to the dancers and company. Through their efforts and dedication, they will continue to develop their unique vision of Singaporean contemporary dance and to create a significant impact globally.

Mr Liu Thai Ker
Chairman, National Arts Council

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, we congratulate Frontier Danceland and its founders Mdm Low Mei Yoke and Mr Tan Chong Poh.

Although not yet a full-time professional dance company, the artistic achievements of Frontier Danceland have been substantial. While constantly striving to break new grounds and create a unique Singapore identity, it has built up a repertoire of almost 100 dances by both local and foreign choreographers, and performed overseas to high acclaim. In particular, Dance Magazine of New York praised Mdm Low’s “Clould” as a first rate performance at the “2000 Feet-A Celebration of World Dance” Festival in 1999 at Philadelphia, USA.

It is also worth noting that since 1996, under the Council’s Arts Education programme, Frontier Danceland has held over 200 performances in schools, performing for more than 200,000 students.

Setting my choreography of “Crying Jasmine” on Frontier Danceland in 1998 gave me the enormous impact in my dance career as well as the understanding of how the dance artists in Singapore work. They are enthusiasm, hard worker, very artistic and moreover, the dancers of Frontier Danceland represented the group of pioneer dance artists who do not have the best support, yet they do not give up because of the hardship.

The performance that Frontier Danceland gave to the audience, dance educators and professionals in 2000 Feet International Dance Festival in USA, was so excellent that the participants were astonished and gave the highest applause.

It reminds me so much of my early work as a founding dancer of Cloud Gate in 1972. It is the love to dance that the world is lucky to have those artists providing the most beautiful dance performances ever have in each generation to come. And it is the ongoing love that the leader and dancers of Frontier Danceland represents that the modern dance in Singapore will continue and grow to the peak of the international dance world.
