SPROUTS 2010 – New Works Platform for Budding Choreographers

SproutsThe National Arts Council together with Frontier Danceland, are proud to present the second edition of SPROUTS to be held 7 August to 18 September 2010. 

 

SPROUTS aims to identify budding choreographic talent and to provide a platform for the creation of new and original concepts and ideas for dance that will serve as a starting point for further development.

NEW CONTEMPORARY DANCE COURSE – BEGINNER LEVEL

ADULT OPEN CLASS (8-WEEK COURSE)

This course provides an exposure to different Contemporary dance approaches and techniques. With an emphasis on developing physical control, strength and flexibility, students can expect to be physically challenged through explorations and interactions of the movement concepts of Time, Energy and Space, as well as gain basic knowledge on body kinesiology.

FULL-TIME STUDENTS / NSF (10-WEEK COURSE)

Through the engagement of the basic movement concepts of Time, Energy and Space in Contemporary dance, this course will allow participants to gain fundamental kinesiology knowledge necessary for the efficient movement of the body, greater understanding of the connectivity between different body parts, as well as be exposed to some of the approaches and principles of the dance form.

Initiated by Frontier Danceland’s Artistic Director, Ms. Low Mei Yoke, PULSE is a one-year FREE programme designed to nurture young and aspiring dancers. Participants’ potential will be stretched through rigorous practical training mainly in Contemporary dance technique and Improvisation, and versatility challenged from an exposure to various dance genres including Ballet, Jazz, Chinese Classical and Ethnic dance. There will also be opportunities to experience various aspects of the production process, as well as work with both local and overseas choreographers, experienced educators and Frontier Danceland’s professionally trained company dancers. The talents of participants will also be featured in two public performance platforms during the programme.

 


D1M3 – One Dance, Three Mutations

Be mesmerized by 3 Asian male solo performances featuring Chien Hua-Bao (Taiwan), Albert Tiong (Singapore) and Mohamad Sufri Bin Juwahir (Singapore), which are of distinctive and unique styles – D1M3 supports the creation of original works that dynamically integrate and fuse Asian cultural elements in a contemporary performance and explores varied perspectives on the intimate yet often contradictory relationship between Man and the environment.

AFRO-MODERN DANCE WORKSHOP with Vyvyane Loh

This one-time workshop will explore the basic movement vocabulary of African and Afro / Caribbean dance which is the foundation of Jazz and Modern dance in America. It will start with a Horton / Dunham-based warm-up, followed by some basic Afro-based movements in the centre and traveling across the floor, and end with one or two combinations.

Instructor Biography
Vyvyane Loh trained in ballet and jazz as a child. While in college she studied Afro Brazilian dance and Samba under Mauricio Marques, a lead dancer from Balé Foclorico da Bahia. She has also studied in Salvador, Bahia and taught samba and Afro-Brazilian dance in Boston, MA. She is a Boston-based choreographer whose work is usually described as Afro-modern fusion, with strong Horton and Dunham based influences. Other dance forms she has studied are West African, Cuban and Haitian dance. Ms. Loh has choreographed for Wellesley College, Lowell House Opera at Harvard University, and numerous shows and festivals in the Boston area. In addition, she has collaborated with Aparna Sindhoor of Aparna Sindhoor Dance Theatre, Melissa Alexis and numerous African choreographers. Her work is inspired by choreographers such as Alvin Ailey, Katherine Dunham, Ulysses Dove, Ronald Brown, Dwight Rhoden and Robert Battle.
